Trenchless technology has become an effective and economical alternative to open- cut construction. Open cut installation of pipes and conduits in urban areas disrupts traffic, causes pollution and its time consuming. When roads, railways, rivers need to be crossed Trenchless Constrution is less disruptive and quicker than conventionl methods. Trenchless Construction is the preferred method of construction in fast developing areas.
The merits of Trenchless Construction includes:
* Environmental Friendly.
* Negligible disruption of traffic flow.
* Faster and neater construction.

There are various Trenchless technology construction methods, these are as follows:
1. Horizontal Directional Drilling.
2. Micro Tunneling.
3. Laser Guided Tunneling.
4. Laser Guided pipe jacking.
5. Auger Boring

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is pushing method to install pipelines below a riverbed without entering the river or disturbing the riverbanks.The HDD process is carried out from dry ground, well away from the riverbanks.The pipeline to be installed is welded in a straight line on one side of the river.The HDD unit is positioned on the opposite bank of the river. Using a proprietary drilling method, drilled pipe is advanced along a predetermined arc. The drill pipe is steered along this event under the riverbed until it reaches the predetermined exit surface location near the product pipe string. The borehole is enlarged and conditioned. The product pipe is then pulled through the borehole. This technique can also be used to install pipelines below railroad crossings, highways, congested city locations and other protected areas where the cut and cover method is impractical.

ADVANTAGES OF TRUNCHLESS CONSTRUCTION

• MINIMAL ENVIRONMENT IMPACT
Trenchless Construction is environmentally friendly. Open-cut requires excavating the ground surface and removing the material whereas in Trenchless Construction this is not required or minimal.
• NO DISRUPTION DURING CONSTRUCTION
There is no hold up of traffic and inconvenience to pedestrians. Traffic can flow normally while Trenchless Construction continues below the ground.
• SHORTER CONSTRUCTION PERIOD
The Trenchless onstruction requires shorter construction period than conventional crossing.
• GREATER RELIABILITY
Generally the minimum cover can be increased or decreased, as needed.
